This video shows a drum worker in Bamako, Mali, assembling a Jeli Dundun (Kasonke drum).
This drum is mainly used around the Kayes region of Western Mali by the Kasonke people.
The goat skin is thoroughly softened to help create a warm bass sound. A lightweight wood is used (usually boumou or melina) to help make the drum more wearer friendly. Played usually with a curved or two piece angled stick in one hand and an accompaniment bell struck with a heavy thumb ring on the other.
