Franklin Humanities Institute's new World Arts Series: https://fhi.duke.edu/programs/world-arts-series Do we discover the 'world' by exploring it from corner to corner and familiarising ourselves with it? Do we get a sense of 'world literature' by reading extensively? Or does the 'world' present itself, each time, in a fresh encounter - with an unfamiliar neighbourhood, a text, or an artefact - that raises questions about what comprises intimacy and strangeness? Amit Chaudhuri came to the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University and spoke on a variety of 'encounters' and conceptual approaches, encompassing his travels in Europe and India, the way he put together the Vintage Book of Modern Indian Literature, Satyajit Ray's first viewing of Rashomon, Tagore's idea of 'world literature', and his own 'non-fusion' music project. Amit Chaudhuri is a novelist, poet, essayist, literary critic, editor, North Indian classical singer and music composer. This event was part of FHI's newest initiative, our World Arts series!
