In college, I could bench press close to 400-pounds but I couldn’t even do a single bodyweight pullup. Bad! Sad! Yes, I was that meathead cliche who didn’t do enough pulling to balance out my pushing. As a result, I had terrible back development (specifically the lats), poor posture, and unwanted shoulder injuries. To fully develop your back, you need a healthy mix of rowing and pullup/pulldown variations in multiple planes of motion (and even some isolated shoulder extension). Some experts recommend doing twice as much pulling as pushing and doing twice as many sets of rows as pullups. But at the very least, please make sure you’re at least doing a set of pulls/rows for every set of pushes/presses. Band/Cable Crossover Straight-Arm Lat Pulldowns 10. 1-Arm Split Stance Flywheel Rows Honorable mentions include dumbbell lying pullovers (I prefer banded ab wheel rollouts), hip-hinges, and farmer’s walks.
