We have exclusive access to the Royal Brompton Hospital Ecmo unit - where doctors are engaged in pioneering work with those who are so ill that normal intensive care wards haven't been enough, And Doctors there tell us this isn't over yet. The ECMO machine is the final hope when ventilation is no longer enough to keep a patient alive. As a patient's lungs fail - the extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation machine pumps the blood out of the body and re-oxygenates it.
We are at one of just six ECMO units across the UK at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London where some of the country's sickest Covid patients are fighting for their lives.
