HUWAG MAGPATALO SA TUKSO, GAMITIN ANG DIYOS PARA MANALO - Homily by Fr Danichi Hui First Sunday of Lent (B) February 18, 2024 | Sunday Readings: Genesis 9:8-15; | Psalms 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; | First Peter 3:18-22; | Mark 1:12-15 Story: Once there is a man tempting a woman to cheat. The woman resisted. The man said; “no one will know.” The woman replied, “no, three will know.” (Hindi, tatlo ang makaka-alam). The man did not understand. The woman said; “when I cheat, you will know, I will now and God will know.” Introduction: My dear bothers and sisters, this is what the stories from our Readings today would want to teach us. “Temptation is the weakness of one’s self used by the devil to win.” Biblical: We heard in our Gospel that Jesus was led by the Spirit to the desert where he remained for forty days and tempted by Satan. In the Scriptures the desert is often referred to as a “place for testing and transformation”. It is where weakness of oneself and dependence on God are experienced. In the desert, resources for survival are hard to find like water and food. The temperature and emptiness are oppressive to both body and mind. (Tila kumakalaban sa katawan at pag-iisip) The desert is a place where our illusions of self-sufficiency and comfort fade away. It is a place of realization that we need God. Lahat parang “trial and error.” Biblical: This is not far from the desert experience of Jesus. For forty days of nothingness and emptiness he was tempted. Not to mention the wild beasts that surrounded him. But the angels ministered to him (pinaglingkuran ng mga anghel) in the end he won over the temptation of Satan. Contemporary: Lahat tayo may kaniya kaniyang karanasan ng disyerto. We have God to use to win over our temptations. We allow our angels to guide us. Like Jesus, throughout his desert experience he was praying. Yes, prayer is our way and God is our weapon to win over the temptations. Biblical: This is the covenant that God made in our First Reading. That after the storm and great flood that had happened to Noah; God made a covenant that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed. No one will be harmed. My dear brothers and sisters, remember this; “Temptation is the weakness of one’s self used by the devil to win. So resistance to temptation is one’s strength, used to win over the devil. #frdanichihui #danichihui #NuestraSenoraDeGuia #ErmitaChurch
