The Jamaica native can certainly hit the notes, but she’s just as impressive leading crowds with toasts, boasts and more than a little brashness. Maxed-out confidence is right there in the name of last year’s debut: ‘ALPHA,’ an album throughout which the “Diana” singer puts her own desires first. “I’m the one you want/I’m the one you need,” she proclaims on the Tyga-assisted album opener “Target.” Two tracks later she’s going full sexual self-empowerment on “Deserve It,” a pop-leaning bop with a breathy hook a la TLC and Destiny’s Child. That features include both Caribbean staples such as Beanie Man and Sean Paul alongside hip-hop luminaries 21 Savage and Megan Thee Stallion tells you she’s aiming for full crossover cred. “Waistline” and “Hit & Run” certainly do the job, and the only thing these two exclusive performances are missing is a sweaty crowd dancing alongside her.
