Did you know Rio is actually based on a true story? In the movie, Blu and Jewel are Spix’s macaws. Less than 100 of these exist today, and are essentially extinct in the wild. About 9 years before the film came out, a Spix’s macaw named Presley was discovered and eventually given to a captive breeding program. Despite attempts to breed, the eggs were infertile and Presley later passed away. Safe to say the movie had a much happier ending.
