In 1853, a diplomatic crisis broke out between France and Russia on the issue of the holy places in the holy city Jerusalem, in the Ottoman Empire. This infighting worsened quickly and provoked a big-empire-concerned war. Half of the Crimean War was spent by the long and exhausting siege of Sevastopol where the Russian fleet anchored.
