In the middle of the Palatinate Forest, architect Roland has fulfilled a dream: To build one day the way he thinks is right. All his life as an architect, the passive house has been his big topic: energy-efficient and environmentally friendly construction and building with the lowest possible CO2 footprint. He has implemented this sustainable construction method here on his property. It is located on a slope that merges directly into the forest. In order to intervene as little as possible in the terrain, Roland decided to build his house on five used sea containers. These perfectly compensate for the slope of the plot. The containers automatically gave Roland's house a depth of 6.5 metres, a container length. At first, he wanted to implement the container idea when building the house and put a 13-metre-long sea container on top of the house. But that would have been too narrow for him as a living space. That's why he decided on a wooden superstructure that is one metre wider than the usual container dimensions, but gives the same visual impression. On the other side, the building is therefore now 28 metres long in total. In sustainable construction, it was also important to Roland to use as little concrete as possible, because its production requires a lot of CO2. That's why he only poured concrete under the containers and thus only used four to five cubic metres of concrete. The usual amount for a residential building would be 100 to 150 cubic metres. Although Roland's container house is very individual and architecturally unusual, it is only half as expensive as a standard single-family house. This is because it was important to Roland to plan and build as resource-efficiently as possible. And even now that the house is standing, it hardly consumes any resources. It is a passive house that requires no energy from outside and regulates itself. Thanks to its construction and insulation, it loses virtually no energy. Roland took into account both the sun's rays and the cooling draught from the forest on the slope. Roland originally comes from Mannheim and only came to Erfweiler by a curious coincidence. As a young man, he wanted to travel to India in a converted van. As he was about to leave, he met a returnee from India who was from Erfweiler. Together with him, he went to Erfweiler, fell in love with the place and gave India a miss. As a passionate climber and outdoor sportsman, he was fascinated by the surroundings of the Dahner Felsenland. He then moved back to Mannheim in his professional life, but after handing over his architectural practice there, he was drawn back to his favourite place in the Southwest Palatinate. With the container house, he fulfilled his personal dream of sustainable construction. Construction began in March 2020. Roland built almost everything himself, both on the house itself and in the house, including a lot of furniture, lamps and mirrors. He only had help with the wooden post and beam construction and the roof. He got himself a crane, an excavator and a truck so that he could work independently. He is now very happy with the result and feels very comfortable. If he were to build again, it would certainly look different, says Roland, because a lot also depends on the building site and the surroundings.
