Esmolol is only one of the selective beta blocker that is given by IV infusion. Other selective beta blockers are mainly given by oral route and among them drugs like atenolol and metoprolol can also be given by IV route but as bolus administration. On the other hand, esmolol is given as continuous IV administration as the drug has very short duration of action with a half-life of 9 min.
